How To Be Different
by Zoe Ramirez
Being different,
It does not come easy.
Especially in a place
Where everyone is the same.
Being different is
Not just standing out,
It's being unique.
It's the patient black sheep,
In a herd of scurrying white sheep.
You might not get it.
No, here in East Berlin,
Everyone is the same.
Being different, unique,
Is a big crime.
The Statsi watches us,
Our every move.
The people of East Berlin,
They are not succeeding,
But not failing either,
For they seem not to care.
I don't want to be like them,
I want to be different,
Because I think everyone should
Have the right to be different.
Being different is not a crime.
Individuality is not a weakness,
It is not a sickness of the West.
From my eyes,
Individuality is a strength.
It just might get us one
Step closer to getting
The Berlin Wall taken down.
So even in East Berlin,
I will speak what I think,
Do what I want,
And live how I want to live.
Because it is not a crime to be
different.
It is what
being unique is.
