An Interview of Black Market Dude by Nathan Kwon

Today, we will interview a special guest from Berlin. He has not given the permission to say his name, so we will call him “Black Market Dude” for now. Black Market Dude is a smuggler who sells illegal items to East Berlin. Let’s ask him some questions.

Q: When did you begin smuggling items into East Berlin?
A: I started smuggling items into East Berlin at 17. I was going to move to America at 18, but changed my mind.

Q: Why did you start to sell illegal items?
A: My family was very poor and needed the money, so I took the risk to save my family.

Q: Was anyone helping you when you started selling illegal items?
A: Yes. A boy named Peter in East Berlin helped me smuggle in items, and we split the money evenly. Unfortunately, he was shot and killed trying to escape East Berlin.

Q: When did you stop smuggling items and why?
A: I stopped smuggling items when the Berlin Wall came down. I stopped because I had enough money to buy a home and raise my family. I eventually started a shop where the Berlin Wall used to be.

Q: Is the shop still running?
A: No, it is not. It closed in 2001.

That concludes our interview with Black Market Dude.
